Honorable John Lewis

John Lewis, a Fisk University alumnus and chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, was beaten on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in 1965 and later served more than three decades in Congress. He called the work of democracy “good trouble.”

A leader of the Selma-to-Montgomery voting-rights campaign.
Represented Georgia in the U.S. House from 1987 until his death in 2020.
Inducted into the National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame in 1992.
