About
Elizabeth Evelyn Wright (1872–1906) founded the school that became Voorhees University in Denmark, South Carolina. A Tuskegee-trained educator in the tradition of Booker T. Washington, she built an institution for African American youth in the face of hostility and scarce resources. She is honored posthumously.
Accomplishments
Founded Denmark Industrial School, later Voorhees College / Voorhees University.
Established a lasting campus for Black education in rural South Carolina.
Inducted posthumously into the NBCA Hall of Fame in 2024 in Education.
