Dr. Melissa C. Green Parker, valedictorian of Claflin University, became the first African American to earn a Ph.D. in biochemistry and molecular biology from the Indiana University School of Medicine. She is a scientific advisor in the NIH Office of Disease Prevention and has held leadership roles at NHLBI, the Department of Defense, and UNCF Special Programs.

- Prior program leadership at NHLBI, DoD, and UNCF Special Programs Corporation.
- Claflin valedictorian; first African American Ph.D. in IU’s biochemistry and molecular biology department. Inducted in 2023 in Science.
