Hon. Parren Mitchell

Parren Mitchell, a Morgan State University graduate, was Maryland’s first African American member of Congress in the twentieth century. He chaired the Small Business Committee and pushed minority-contracting rules into federal law.

• First Black member of Congress from Maryland in the twentieth century.
• Inducted into the National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame in 1996.
