Honorable Eva Clayton

Eva Clayton, a Johnson C. Smith University alumna, became the first African American to represent North Carolina in Congress since Reconstruction. She later served as an assistant director-general at the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization.

• U.S. representative from North Carolina, 1992–2003.
• First Black member of Congress from the state in the twentieth century.
• Inducted into the National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame in 1997.
