About
Elizabeth Evelyn Wright (1872–1906) founded the school that became Voorhees University in Denmark, South Carolina. A Tuskegee-trained educator in the tradition of Booker T. Washington, she built an institution for African American youth in the face of hostility and scarce resources. She is honored posthumously.
Accomplishments
- Founded Denmark Industrial School, later Voorhees College / Voorhees University.
- Established a lasting campus for Black education in rural South Carolina.
- Inducted posthumously into the NBCA Hall of Fame in 2024 in Education.
