Ralph Abernathy, an Alabama State alumnus, was Martin Luther King Jr.’s closest lieutenant and successor as SCLC president. He helped lead the Montgomery bus boycott and the Poor People’s Campaign.
Accomplishments
- Co-founder of the Montgomery Improvement Association and SCLC.
- Succeeded King as SCLC president in 1968.
- Inducted into the National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame in 2012.
