David Dennis, Sr.

David Dennis, Sr., Dillard University Class of 1968, is a veteran of the civil rights movement. As a student he joined CORE, rode in the Freedom Rides, and later helped organize Mississippi Freedom Summer. He has spent decades since then on education and justice work, including the Algebra Project.

• CORE field secretary and co-director of 1964 Mississippi Freedom Summer with Bob Moses.
• Delivered the eulogy for James Chaney; later directed work connected to the Southern Initiative of the Algebra Project.
• Co-author, with his son, of The Movement Made Us. Inducted into the NBCA Hall of Fame in 2024 in Civil Rights.
