National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame Statement on USA Supreme Court Decision on Affirmative Action in Higher Education Admissions

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Atlanta, GA – July 1, 2023 The National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame is disappointed, concerned and staunchly denounces the recent decision of the United States Supreme Court in Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. President and Fellows of Harvard College (and The University of North Carolina). This unjust reversal of over a half-century of case law and progress is a continuation of the seemingly direct attack on equality, fairness and precedents by the current court. The significantly negative impact on access to – and equity in -higher education for marginalized populations will likely lead to further limits of future employment and decreases in the quality of life for those populations. Of equally immense concern is the highly likely continued infiltration into other aspects of an equal and just society.

We believe that talent exists in every fiber within the fabric of American society, and that every exceptional individual should have access to a quality education. Diversity enhances and invigorates debate, questions and critical thinking through the colorful experiences and perspectives brought to solving the most important issues of our world. Indeed, the multicultural facts of our country and world demand that the best of everyone be engaged in authentic ways in order to find the most innovative and best solutions.

We also stand confident in knowing that the Historical Black Colleges & Universities have served as highly qualified institutions of learning throughout their existence – in times of overt systemic discrimination and veiled exclusionary efforts – and will continue to do so during this abrogation of admissions standards. We stand with all people and organizations that are committed to equality in education and social justice to develop an appropriate and immediate response to these efforts aimed at dividing our country and taking our society backwards. We stand ready to collaborate on the development of systemic means and programmatic initiatives to combat the effects of bias and discrimination that continue to diminish and hinder our societal progress.

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly.
Martin Luther King, Jr.
